My Internship Experience at Booksie's Holiday Reading Camp 2023

My Internship Experience at Booksie's Holiday Reading Camp 2023

Dear Future Booksie Interns,

Welcome! We’re excited that you’re interested in joining Booksie. Before you start, we have one question: Are you ready for the adventure ahead? Working with children is both challenging and rewarding, and we're here to share our experiences with you. We are Elizabeth, Naa Lamiorkor, and Christina, and we hope our stories will give you a glimpse of what to expect. Enjoy the read!

Elizabeth – Beginner's Level One

Hi everyone, I’m Elizabeth. My journey at Booksie was filled with adventures, fun, and some serious moments. I joined Booksie to gain work experience and build skills like teaching and communication. I almost skipped my internship interview, influenced by friends who didn’t want to intern in their first year. I'm so glad I went ahead with it!

Booksie is a Pan-African company that helps children improve their reading skills through Jolly Phonics, guided reading of African books, and activities like arts and crafts, dance, drama, and creative writing. During my internship, I worked on my patience, tolerance, decision-making, and report-writing skills. Handling the Beginner’s Level One group was an incredible experience. The children were lovely, smart, and very talkative. It was a rollercoaster of laughter, learning, and loads of fun. My advice? Enjoy what you’re doing, be firm yet kind, and embrace every moment. Good luck!

Naa Lamiorkor – Beginner's Level Two

Hey there, I’m Naa Lamiorkor. Teaching the Beginner’s Level Two class was a fantastic experience. I started with just two children, which helped me ease into the role. By the end of my internship, I was managing eight children at a time! It was challenging, but I learned never to give up. A quick prayer and a smile can overcome any obstacle.

My key takeaway? Plan to enjoy and participate in everything, from icebreakers to arts and crafts. Immerse yourself in the activities and be firm when needed. This internship was a mix of good, tiring, and extremely tiring days, but it was an experience I truly enjoyed. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Christina – Independent Readers

Hello, lovely people. I’m Christina Dery, and I taught the Independent Readers. My experience was unique and rewarding. Initially, I had one child in my group, which allowed us to finish a book in a few days. As more children joined, the group discussions became even more engaging.

Booksie readers are different; their diverse personalities made the community lively and fun. The most memorable moments were during arts and crafts and dance sessions. Children would often say they couldn’t do something, but with a little encouragement, they always ended up enjoying the activity. As a facilitator, it’s important to have an open mind and heart. Joining Booksie is something I will never regret, and I believe you won’t either. Embrace every moment and find joy in what you do.

Final Words

Our two-month internship at Booksie’s 2023 Holiday Reading Camp was filled with ups and downs, but it was an unforgettable experience. We learned a lot and had a great time. We hope you will too!

Best wishes,

Elizabeth, Naa Lamiorkor, and Christina.
